Police officer arrested in fatal shooting in Semarang – Archipelago

Central Java Police have arrested a police officer who allegedly shot and killed a 17-year-old high school student in Semarang, Central Java, amid mounting public pressure for officers to launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the case.

The officer was identified as the second attendant. Insp. Robig Zaenudin, who was assigned to the Semarang Police Narcotics Unit. He was arrested at the Central Java Police Headquarters during an investigation by the provincial police’s internal affairs department.

Police allege that Robig used excessive force, using a firearm, to break up a reported fight. He is also accused of violating procedures regarding the use of weapons on duty by not firing a warning shot and instead pointing the gun directly at three teenagers on a motorcycle.

“We also received reports from the victim’s parents. We also interviewed two of the victim’s friends who were also shot during the incident. They were accompanied by parents and school representatives,” Central Java Police spokesman, Senior Comr. Artanto said on Thursday evening.

Despite the arrest for internal reasons, the police have not yet considered Robig a suspect because the ethics investigation against him is still ongoing.

A 17-year-old student of SMK 4 Semarang State Vocational High School, identified only by his initials GRO, was shot by an officer who said he was trying to break up a gang fight outside a housing estate in western Semarang in early September. November 24. GRO was taken to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.
