A stowaway on a flight from New York to Paris causes disruption on the return flight

The woman who sneaked onto a Delta Air Lines flight from New York to Paris earlier this week without a boarding pass was removed from Saturday’s return flight after causing disruption before takeoff.

CBS News has confirmed that a stowaway caused disruption on Delta Flight 265 from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Charles de Gaulle International Airport on Saturday. John F. Kennedy.

It was cleared by French law enforcement, causing a delay of more than two hours before its final departure. CBS News has learned that he will not return to the United States on Saturday and will remain in French custody for now.

French authorities accompanied her to the plane but did not travel with her. Once on board, she became disruptive and the police were called to take her away.

Although authorities did not release her name, two people familiar with the case identified the woman on Saturday to CBS News as 57-year-old Svetlana Dali.

The woman has a driver’s license showing she is a resident of Philadelphia. According to a friend who did not immediately know what her home country was, she is in the US on a green card. The French Ministry of the Interior identified her as a Russian citizen.

The situation initially occurred on Tuesday when the woman boarded Delta flight 265 from JFK to Paris without a boarding pass. The flight was not sold out, which was learned when a flight attendant became concerned about the woman’s frequent and prolonged visits to various restrooms aboard the Boeing 767-400ER, according to a source familiar with the incident.

French police boarded the plane after landing and took her into custody.

U.S. federal authorities do not plan to charge her with a federal crime at this time, one person familiar with the matter told CBS News. However, she faces state criminal charges in New York, possibly state trespassing charges.

Passenger Rob Jackson, who shot video of French authorities boarding the plane after landing in Paris, told CBS News he noticed strange behavior by flight attendants during the descent.

“I heard them say we had a passenger who we thought was hiding in the restroom during takeoff,” Jackson said. “She has no place. She didn’t have a boarding pass. And he’s basically a stowaway.”

A Transportation Security Agency source told CBS News that the woman passed through a sophisticated body scanner at the JFK airport checkpoint after she appeared to somehow evade document and identity checks as part of the TSA process. The source said that before she approached the gate and sneaked onto the plane, her bags were also scanned for prohibited items.

A TSA spokesperson confirmed in a statement that the woman “without a boarding pass was physically screened for prohibited items” and then “bypassed two identity and boarding status verification stations and boarded the aircraft.”

After passing through TSA security, it is unclear how the woman boarded the plane without showing Delta employees her boarding pass or passport.

French law enforcement authorities and the TSA are conducting a separate investigation into the matter. A woman may face a civil penalty or fine for skipping document inspection.
