A man has died after telling police a suspect in Newport punched him multiple times

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A man has been charged with assault and murder after attacking another man at his Newport home on Wednesday, according to the Newport Police Department.

At approximately 9 p.m., police responded to 207 Northwest 15th Street for reports of a fight.

According to witnesses and the victim, Jeffrey Sutton, who lived there, 68-year-old Mark Rodgers was under the influence of alcohol and became “aggressive.” Sutton said he asked Rodgers to leave the house. Rodgers allegedly responded by punching Sutton repeatedly in the head and body.

Sutton was conscious when police arrived, but during an interview with NPD officers, he said Sutton began having difficulty breathing and showed “signs of respiratory distress.”

Despite first aid from the police and the arrival of paramedics, Sutton lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:30 p.m.

Rodgers was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault. He was booked into the Lincoln County Jail.
