A 35-year-old man who stabbed a police chief while fleeing from a police booth in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur on Friday was arrested on Saturday after an exchange of fire with police, police said.

He shot twice at police officers, but no one was hurt. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Adil, who is registered with the New Usmanpur Police Station as a person of bad character, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Rakesh Paweriya, adding that a semi-automatic pistol with one bullet was found in his possession.

Sharing details of Friday’s attack on a policeman, DCP Paweriya said that Superintendent of Police Azad Akhtar of New Usmanpur police station was on patrol when he came across Adil, who was behaving suspiciously. He took Adil to Gautam Vihar police station for questioning. Meanwhile, Adil’s brother Balwa, who is also the bad guy of the police station, arrived at the booth with three-four women.

“They started attacking head constable Akhtar. Bawla tore the policeman’s uniform and Adil attacked him in the chest with a sharp object, causing him severe injuries. Then all the attackers fled the scene. The injured top cop was admitted to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital for treatment. A case of obstructing and assaulting a government employee on duty and attempt to murder has been registered under Art. 221, 132 and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and an inquiry has been initiated,” the DCP said.

On Saturday, the police came to know that Adil was hiding in the forested area of ​​the third puszta of Yamuna Khadar. “After a short search, Adil was located and asked to surrender. However, he took out a gun and fired two bullets at the invaders, who responded with the same number of bullets. One bullet hit Adil in the right leg, after which he was overpowered and arrested. Adil was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment,” DCP Paweriya added.
