Traco Cables employee’s suicide sparks protests over unpaid wages | Kochi News

Employees protest at PSU due to the suicide of a colleague

Kochi: Following the alleged suicide employee of Irumpanam unit Traco cablespublic sector undertaking (PSU), employees of this company organized a protest in front of the headquarters at ul charger on Saturday.
The employees accused the deceased of not receiving wages for several months, which put him in serious financial problems. Just two years ago, employees said the company was doing well. They alleged that they had not received regular salary for the last two years and no salary had been paid at all for the last 11 months.
It was 54-year-old P. Unni who was found dead at his house in Kakkanad on Friday evening. The workers said that they would continue their violent protests after Unni’s funeral and would not allow another worker to face a difficult situation like him.
Meanwhile, a protest march was held under the banner of the INTUC trade union, blaming the government and the industry department for the deaths. The workers burned the effigy of Industries Minister P. Rajeeve.
Rajeve said the death was indeed sad. He said that at this stage no one has been able to determine the cause of the suicide and an investigation is necessary. He added that the company’s accumulated loss was Rs 245 crore and the government had given it Rs 30 crore as relief, apart from a loan of Rs 14 crore from another PSU.
