Police say a 12-year-old stole his grandfather’s car and drove it 260 miles

Washington state officials said Wednesday that a 12-year-old boy who stole his grandfather’s car and drove it about 260 miles is now in police custody.

According to an affidavit filed by Grant County authorities, the boy, who has not been identified, allegedly stole a car from his grandfather in Issaquah, Washington. shared on social media. The boy had “some ties” to a town in Grant County, in eastern Washington state, so Issaquah police notified county deputies the boy might be driving there.

After receiving the call, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit went to search for the car. At approximately 10:20 a.m., police found the vehicle parked at the curb. The boy then allegedly “led deputies on a short pursuit,” the sheriff’s office said.

The pursuit ended when deputies executed a PIT maneuverwhich is when a law enforcement vehicle pulls up next to another car, forcing it to swerve and stop. No one was injured and damage to the vehicles was “minimal,” police said.

The boy drove a total of 261 miles before he was stopped by police. reports the Seattle Times.. His route included a drive through the Cascade Mountains.

The sheriff’s office said the boy is in custody at the Chelan County Juvenile Justice Center on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evading.
