Nicola Sturgeon joins mourners at the funeral of comic Janey Godley | Ents and artistic news

Mourners pay their last respects to comedian Janey Godley at her funeral in Glasgow.

She died earlier this month at the age of 63 after palliative treatment for incurable cancer.

Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was one of those who took part in the service at St. Mary’s Cathedral Glasgow.

Ms Godley has gained surprising fame for her impressions of Ms Sturgeon’s COVID-19 press conferences during the pandemic.

Were-SNP the leader described her as a “force of nature” and “one of the funniest people I have ever known.”

Other mourners also attended the service, dressed in bright colors, in accordance with Godley’s wishes.

The Rev. Kelvin Holdsworth began by telling the crowd that Godley would be remembered with “kindness and love,” before adding that “forgiveness” would be one of the themes of the service.

Her daughter, Ashley Storrie, who is also a comedian, spoke during the service and said that her mother “asked me to headline her funeral” but “I can’t tell her jokes because of the ‘house of God’ and all that.” “.

“She was a comedian, that was her specialty. She tried to play, she hated it. She was a terrible singer. She couldn’t knit, she tried. There are photos of Liam Neeson with a terrible scarf to prove it. But who she was, she was a comedian,” she added.

She concluded – her voice cracking – by asking “for the last time…please join your hands for my mother, Janey Godley.”

The crowd then stood up, cheering and applauding.

Gavin Mitchell, who played bartender Bobby on the TV series Still Game, was also among the mourners.

As the coffin was carried out of the church, a recording of Godley’s famous slogan, “Frank, Get the Door,” was played to the congregation.

Godley’s coffin took away two-day “final tour” With Edinburgh and Glasgow ahead of her funeral on Saturday, ahead of a private cremation.

Godley revealed she had ovarian cancer in November 2021, but despite being fully informed in 2022, the disease returned.

She died in a hospice in Glasgow on November 2, shortly after receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow.

Known for her stand-up career, which included several radio shows and numerous television appearances, Godley did not shy away from openly discussing cancer and controversial topics.

She gained worldwide fame in 2018 after protesting at Donald Trump’s golf resort in Turnberry, holding a sign reading “Trump is an ac***.”
