Telangana student shot dead in a shopping mall in Chicago, had gone to the US 4 months ago

On Friday, a student from Telangana was fatally shot by gunmen at a shopping mall in the US city of Chicago.

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Sai Teja Nukarapu, was shot dead at the mall where he worked part-time. He was a resident of Khammam district in Telangana.

Teja was working at the cash register in a shopping mall when a group of armed men walked in, opened fire on him and took the cash. He died on the spot.

Teja completed her BBA in India and pursued her MBA in the US. Three months ago he went to the United States for higher studies.

Another one about a week ago An Indian student from Telangana died after he accidentally failed to fire a gun on his birthday. The student, identified as 23-year-old Aryan Reddy, died in Atlanta, Georgia.

Meanwhile, data from US consular officials in Hyderabad revealed that India has overtaken China as the country with the highest number of students in US universities in 2023-24. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana accounted for 56 per cent of these students, of which 34 per cent were from Telangana and 22 per cent from Andhra Pradesh.

Rebekah Drame, head of the U.S. consulate in Hyderabad, said the consulate conducted more than 47,000 student visa interviews in the summer of 2024, up from 35,000 in 2023. Public affairs officer Alexander McLaren noted that India sent last nearly 3.3 lakh students to the US annually, with most of them having master’s degrees.
