Three California teenagers died in a fire Tesla Cybertruck disaster on Thanksgiving Eve were identified Friday as Bay Area college students and longtime friends. Police were investigating whether excessive speed played a role in the painful crash, authorities said.

Jack Nelson, Soren Dixon and Krysta Tsukahara – 19-year-old college sophomores who met in high school – were driving home from a party in Piedmont at 3 a.m. Wednesday when an SUV jumped a curb, hit a tree and burst into flames, according to CBS San Francisco.

A fourth friend, Jordan Miller, a 20-year-old University of Wisconsin sophomore, survived the crash but suffered severe burns, his mother, Samantha Miller, told the station.

He underwent surgery on Friday morning.

“It’s a devastating situation. And you know, we all think about the children who died,” Miller said.

Nelson and Dixon played on the Piedmont High School lacrosse team, and Nelson also played junior varsity and varsity soccer.

Dixon went on to play lacrosse at the University of Southern California, and Nelson attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he joined the Sigma Nu fraternity.

It was not immediately clear what university Tsukahara attended.

According to the police, on Friday the officers were checking whether excessive speed was a possible cause of the accident. No other vehicles were involved.

The futuristic-looking electric vehicle jumped a curb, hit a cement wall and became stuck between the wall and a tree, Piedmont Police Capt. Chris Monahan told the Chronicle.

Tesla announced its Cybertruck recall list for 2024 earlier this year.

Last month, Elon Musk’s automaker said it would recall more than 27,000 vehicles because of delayed rearview camera images that could impair driver vision and increase the risk of a crash.

It also voluntarily recalled thousands of Cybertrucks in April over faulty accelerator pedals that can cause fatal crashes, and in June over windshield wipers and exterior trim problems.
